Johan Friemann

I received my engineering diploma in the spring of 2021 from Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden. My Bachelor’s degree was in Engineering Physics, where I studied a broad range of topics such as classical mechanics, quantum mechanics, electromagnetic field theory, circuitry, and experimental physics. During my Bachelor studies I discovered my interest in continuum mechanics with a focus on a rigorous tensor formalism. It was therefore natural to pursue a Master’s degree in Applied Mechanics, where I focused on solid and material mechanics. After taking a course in composite mechanics a new interest was born, and I attended an exchange year at the University of Tokyo in professor Takahashi’s Carbon Fiber Innovation laboratory. There I was given the opportunity to learn a lot about the practical aspects of composite materials, and I was a member of the winning team in category B of SAMPE Japan’s composite material bridge building contest. After returning to Sweden, I was introduced to the powers of AI through my Master’s thesis project which was concerned with the use of deep recurrent neural networks to predict the material response of short fiber composites. After graduating I decided to join DeepX as a simulator engineer because I was given the opportunity to combine my love for mechanics with the emerging power of AI.


I truly believe that automation has the power to be a strong force for good if used responsibly. Automating manufacturing tasks can reduce material waste, contributing to sustainable industry, while automation of dangerous and dirty tasks can protect the health of people. I feel that the values of DeepX promotes a responsible and positive use of AI and automation. The ambitious motto of “Automating Any Machine” resonates with original purpose of why we use machines in the first place, namely, performing tasks faster, safer, and more precisely. I am very happy to become a part of the internationally diverse and talented team of DeepX, and I hope to be able to contribute to the development of solutions that can make people’s lives more comfortable, safe, and sustainable.

  • I love adventurous activities in nature such as hiking, mountain climbing, skiing, and SCUBA diving. The diverse climate of Japan is really a dream for outdoors activities. The subtropical southern islands offer incredible diving opportunities during summer, while the north presents world renowned snow conditions for skiing in the winter.

  • I have played the guitar since my teenage years, and I actually attended a highschool program with a music profile. I like many different musical genres, but I mostly play and listen to Jazz and Jazz-fusion. I'm happy to see that several DeepX team members enjoy and play music, maybe there is an opportunity for a company band?
